http://www.examiner.com/article/today-s-singular-music-of-two-zuill-bailey-and-emily-bear

X: In that context, how did it happen that Emily Bear rose to the top of your wish list to kick off this series?

ZB: Because of the people I surrounded myself with and support, I got to meet and work and record and travel a little with Emily. I made a jazz album with her on the Concord label, one that Quincy Jones managed. I immediately saw what, under Quincy’s tutelage and guidance, he sees in her.

She is an absolutely exceptional… It’s literally... It makes one believe the myths and the grandeur of what Mozart would have been like had you met him. This person is so purely gifted that music simply pours out of her. It pours out with such joy and creativity and spontaneity that you just stand back in awe.

She’s obviously classically trained. But she’s not just an interpreter and performer. She writes her own music. Everything that you hear on that album came from her. She wrote everyone’s part. She directed us. One forgets within minutes that you’re listening to someone who is a child.

It’s rather mind-boggling. This ability comes around so rarely. I believe the word prodigy is so so so overused for business tactics and salability.

I believe this, Emily, is truly a prodigy. She is truly a prodigy in the real use of the word.

X: I presume, I hope, we’ll get to hear you make some music with Emily?

ZB: I will join her for a couple selections. Fun things that she created with me in mind.

X: Will they pieces you’re already familiar with?

ZB: It’s her show, and it will be wonderful. With her, you never know. There will also be a 30 minute pre-show where we’ll get the sort of added attraction of audience interaction.

Ein Standard Spiel bei Solokonzerten ist die Improvisation von Musik zu Szenen/ Geschichten, die vom Publikum erfunden werden.

Improvisation 1

Improvisation 1 is about a moose cow and her calf being photographed in the Alaskan wilderness during the summer and how she is very alert to protect her calf. As the photographer walks nearby talking calmly, she is calmed and the moose return to browsing on the foliage while being photographed.

Improvisation 2

Improvisation 2 is about a Cocker Spaniel puppy playing with a butterfly in medium tall grass on a cool sunny day.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HC4Eveu_MiA

Improvisation 3

Improvisation 3 is about a mouse in its mouse hole when a violent rat comes in and pursues it. After a chase and almost having its tail bitten off, the mouse escapes out a secret passage. Once safe, the mouse drifts to sleep on a Maple leaf floating in a pond.
