Do it again, Lena!
About a year ago a group of Eurovision fans started an internet campaign to support the German entry "Satellite", performed by the 18-year-old newcomer Lena. Lena won the contest, as you know, and now the same group of enthusiasts set out to support her successor, and the successor is... Lena!
Immediately after her victory in Oslo German ESC officials suggested that she should defend her title in 2011, and to many people's surprise she accepted the challenge. As a matter of fact, for any other young talent it would have been a heavy burden to follow in Lena's footsteps, trying to win people's hearts. In a recent interview Lena was asked if she wouldn't be damaging her own monument by risking a low rank in her second run. Her reply was absolutely Lena-like: "that's exactly why I'm doing it".
Many TV shows and national awards later, Lena hasn't lost the natural charm of her first appearance on stage (link). Yet she has been working hard to improve her skills. Her second album "Good News" (link) was released on 8 February. Lena performed the 12 new songs during three live shows (link) in which the German TV public had the chance to elect not the singer but the song that will represent Germany in this year's Eurovision Song Contest at Düsseldorf (link).
The song "Taken By A Stranger" (link) that finally won the preselection is very different from last year's Satellite (link). With its mystic electronic sound it takes the audience by surprise. Lena is breaking with any stereotypes of "lovely Lena", showing a new side of herself. In a sense, this can be viewed as another contribution to modernize the ESC.
